Waste Consultant
Nuclear Waste Services has a vacancy for an experienced Waste Consultant to join our Cumbria team on a 2-year fixed term contract.
The purpose of the role will be to provide a range of waste and business consultancy services to both internal and external customers, contributing to the development and growth of the Expert Services and Support Team.
Job Description
Responsibilities
- Assessing technical information and providing advice and guidance on radioactive waste management to both internal and external customers and stakeholders.
- Facilitating workshops on radioactive waste management topics e.g., BAT, BPM, Optioneering, Strategy Development etc.
- Preparation of technical service scope documents, business cases, and change papers.
- Lead on the development of expert and alternative treatment services and manage delivery of projects to scope, schedule and cost.
- Maintain data integrity and accuracy in information management for all required systems.
- Identifying and implementing improvements; leading or supporting change initiatives within the department and wider business.
- Participating in industry working groups / integrated project teams on topics related to decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
- Endeavour to keep abreast of developments in the global decommissioning and waste services sector.
- Develop and sustain collaborative working relationship with all stakeholders including internal staff, service providers and customers.
- Leading or supporting Customer / Service Provider Audits as required.
- Presenting on behalf of Waste Services at various forums, site visits, conferences etc.
- Support junior members of staff as required.

- Budget responsibilities as defined in scheme of delegations (applications for payment etc).

- Intelligent Customer for Waste Services (if identified as a requirement by the Expert Service and Support Lead).
- Subject Matter Expert for Waste Services (if identified as a requirement by the Expert Service and Support Lead).
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential
- Graduate (min 2:2) in relevant discipline or equivalent, possession of appropriate professional qualification, and or extensive relevant experience.
- Technical knowledge of decommissioning and radioactive waste management.
- Knowledge of Nuclear Waste Services, our customer base, and existing suite of waste services.
- Awareness of relevant Policy and Regulatory framework applicable to radioactive waste management across the United Kingdom.
- Experience of delivering consultancy projects.
- Experience of planning, executing / facilitating stakeholder engagement activities (workshops, teleconferences, data gathering, etc.) and analysing outputs and next steps.
- Demonstrably good oral and written communication skills.
- Pursues projects with energy, drive and a need to finish.
- Confident with demonstrable experience working with internal and external stakeholders to build effective relationships, manage expectations and conflict resolution.
- Understanding of and ability to produce documents to ISO 9001 standard.
Desirable
- Experience of working with Nuclear Waste Services Customers and stakeholders.
- Knowledge and experience of transport and packaging of radioactive materials.
- Knowledge of international radioactive waste management supply chain.
- Project management experience of radioactive waste projects.
- Working towards Chartered Waste Manager status.
- Radioactive Waste Advisor.
For internal candidates currently on RWM T&C’s, the RWM grade equivalent for this role is 5-4
