We have an opportunity for a Estimating Lead to join our team on a 12 month secondment or Fixed Term Contract!

 

As an Estimating Lead, you will take charge of delivering high‑quality cost estimates for some of the UK’s most complex nuclear decommissioning projects. You’ll shape the organisation’s cost‑governance approach, build modelling capability, and ensure estimates are accurate, validated, and aligned to strategic goals. Your expertise will underpin business cases, risk assessments, and whole‑lifecycle planning, while driving best practice across the NDA group. This is a key leadership role with real influence on national‑level programmes.

Job Description

  • Represent and act for NWS as an Estimating Lead, demonstrating NWS values and behaviours
  • Lead a group of Estimating professionals within the organisation
  • Support in developing and overseeing the activities and operations of Estimating and Cost processes, procedures, controls, governance framework and resources
  • Lead on the production of cost estimate outputs for stakeholders, including supporting risk analysis using reference class forecasting or quantitative schedule and cost risk analysis as required
  • Effectively communicate with clients, project sponsors and senior stakeholders to provide detailed reports and analyses for a wide portfolio of projects at various points in the project delivery cycle
  • You will own, perform, and direct robust estimate verification and validation procedures to ensure support the Project Controls Quality Assurance processes have positive outcomes
  • You will work collaboratively and interface with internal multidisciplinary teams to champion and contribute to our strategic priorities, initiatives, and Transformation programme of change by undertaking regular audits of NWS Estimating activities to determine maturity and identify areas for continuous improvement in governance, processes, training, tools, and technology
  • Lead and have line management accountability for professionals delivering Estimating services and responsible for staff development
  • As an Estimating specialist, you will keep up to date with evolving business requirements, industry best practice and regulatory change to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of estimating processes.

  • Lead Special Interest groups which are Estimating related and establish connections with outward facing organisations to share learning and deploy best practice approaches
  • Act as design authority reviewer for all Estimating related training and education

 

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

 

  • Professional qualification in Project Management, Project Controls, Engineering, or a relevant degree in a related field
  • Proven experience in Project Management and Project Controls within major projects or programmes
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in Estimating Software 

 

Essential skills:

  • Proven experience in cost estimating within major projects/programmes, ideally in a regulated environment
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail with the ability to interpret technical cost data

 

Desirable skills:

  • Familiarity with projects and programme delivery in the Nuclear Industry
  • Management and leadership skills
  • Advanced proficiency in estimating software and cost modelling tools
  • Accreditation with a professional body and commitment to professional development
