Health Physics Surveyor

We are looking for Health Physics Surveyor's to help protect people, the environment, and the safe operations at Nuclear Waste Services. We have 2x Permanent and 1x Fixed Term Contract opportunities based at the Low Level Waste Repository site.

 

As a Health Physics Surveyor you will play a key role in monitoring ionising radiation, supporting site activities, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements.

Job Description

  • Carry out routine radiation and contamination surveys across site.
  • Change and analyse air and duct sample filters to assess airborne activity.
  • Provide task‑specific Health Physics monitoring to support operational work.
  • Conduct personnel monitoring to prevent the spread of contamination.
  • Work safely in areas with elevated contamination using appropriate PPE/RPE.
  • Take swabs, complete clearance monitoring, and test monitoring equipment.
  • Handle radioactive sources safely and respond to changing radiological conditions.
  • Record survey results clearly and accurately.
  • Participate in emergency on‑call arrangements when required.

Knowledge, skills & experience

  • City and Guilds Level 1 in Radiation Protection (or NVQ Level 2 in Radiation Protection).
  • Proven Experience in fundamental principles of radiation types
  • Have a good understating of radiation and contamination monitoring equipment
  • Practical Experience in safety, security and behavioural expectations of working a Nuclear Licenced site
  • Experience of dealing with radioactive discharges, waste, environmental control and emergencies
  • Familiarity with safety management systems such as Permits, Operating Instructions, and Health Physics Instructions, with the ability to ensure compliance within work teams.
  • Working Knowledge of Ionising Radiations Regulations (IRRs) and other legislation and regulation on working practices.
